If you are a parent of a little one, you have probably heard it before. Play is the work of childhood. But what does that really mean? And why is play so important, especially for children under five?
As a mum of two and the owner of Bear and Cub Play Centre, I see every day how powerful play can be. Not just for kids, but for parents too. So let us go back to basics and talk about why play truly matters.
Play is How Children Learn
For young children, play is not just about having fun, though that is a huge part of it. It is how they learn about the world, their bodies, and their emotions. When your toddler stacks blocks, splashes in water, or pretends to cook in a play kitchen, they are:
• Building problem solving skills
• Developing language and communication
• Learning to share, take turns, and cooperate
• Practising fine and gross motor skills
• Exploring creativity and imagination
All those giggles and messes are real, meaningful learning in action.
The Science Behind Play

Research shows that the first five years are absolutely crucial for brain development. During this time, millions of neural connections are forming every second. Play helps strengthen these connections and lays the groundwork for future learning, emotional regulation, and social skills.
Unstructured play, the kind we encourage at Bear and Cub, lets children follow their curiosity, test new ideas, and build confidence. It is not about doing things perfectly. It is about exploring, experimenting, and feeling safe to try.
Play Builds Connection
One of the most beautiful things about play is how it brings us together. Whether you are rolling a ball back and forth, reading a silly story, or just watching your child discover something new, you are building a bond that will last a lifetime. At Bear and Cub Play Centre, we designed our space to be calm and welcoming so parents can relax and connect with their children and with each other. It is amazing what happens when you step back, slow down, and let play take the lead.
Making Time for Play

Life with young kids can be busy and, let’s be honest, sometimes overwhelming. But even a few minutes of play each day can make a huge difference. You do not need fancy toys or Instagram worthy activities. Just follow your child’s lead and join in the fun. If you ever need inspiration, a change of scenery, or just a safe, supportive place to play, you are always welcome at Bear and Cub. We are here to help you and your little ones make the most of these precious early years.
