Science for toddlers looks like curiosity in action. Pouring, mixing, watching, and wondering. The goal is not perfect results. It is noticing what happens and enjoying the wow. These simple activities use things you likely have at home and keep mess low and attention high.


Before you start

  • Keep it short and simple. Ten to fifteen minutes is enough

  • Set up on a tray or towel and have a damp cloth ready

  • Use child safe tools and stay within arm’s reach

  • Add language that sparks thinking. I wonder what will happen if we add water. What do you notice


Rainbow fizz

What you need: bicarb soda, white vinegar, food colouring, a muffin tin, droppers or spoons

How to: Put a spoon of bicarb in each muffin cup. Add a drop of colour to a few cups. Let your child add vinegar slowly with a dropper and watch the fizz.

Say: You added vinegar and it fizzed. What colours can you see?

Why it works: It is a simple acid and base reaction that shows cause and effect.



Sink or float

What you need: a clear tub of water, a mix of safe items (spoon, leaf, small block, lemon, shell), a towel

How to: Invite your child to guess which items will sink or float. Drop them in and watch together.

Say: You predicted the spoon would sink. You were right. The leaf floats on top.

Why it works: Builds early prediction skills and vocabulary like heavy, light, on top, and bottom.



Magic milk swirls

What you need: shallow dish, milk, a few drops of food colouring, a cotton bud, a little dish soap

How to: Pour milk into the dish. Add colour drops. Touch the surface with a soapy cotton bud and watch the colours race away.

Say: When the soap touched the milk the colours moved. What changed?

Why it works: Soap breaks surface tension and moves the fat in milk, pushing the colours.



Nature ice rescue

What you need: small treasures from the yard (gum leaves, tiny flowers), ice cube tray, water, salt, droppers, a tray

How to: Freeze treasures in water. Tip the ice onto a tray. Offer salt and warm water with droppers to “rescue” the items.

Say: The ice melts faster where the salt touches. What do you notice?

Why it works: Salt lowers the freezing point so the ice melts more quickly.



Balloon rockets (gentle)

What you need: balloon, string, straw, tape, two chairs

How to: Thread a straw onto a long string and tie the ends to two chairs. Tape a balloon to the straw, pinch the end, then let go. Watch it zoom.

Say: The air rushed out and pushed the balloon forward. Which way will it go next time?

Why it works: Action and reaction. A toddler sized intro to forces.


Moon sand

What you need: 8 parts flour and 1 part oil (or taste safe alternative), tray, cups, spoons

How to: Mix until it holds a shape when squeezed. Offer cups to pack and tip.

Say: It holds when you squeeze and crumbles when you tap. What shapes can we make?

Why it works: Sensory exploration builds hand strength and cause and effect.


Colour mixing bags

What you need: zip lock bags, two paint colours in each bag, tape to secure to a window

How to: Tape the bags to a sunny window and let your child squish colours together to make a new one.

Say: Yellow and blue made green. What do you notice in the light?

Why it works: Safe colour mixing with minimal mess and a bright light source.


Shadow hunt

What you need: a torch or window light, toys that cast shapes, plain paper

How to: Shine the torch or place toys in sunlight to cast shadows. Trace the outline with a pencil.

Say: The shadow moved when we moved the torch. What happens if we move it closer?

Why it works: Early ideas about light, distance, and shape.



Tips to keep the calm

  • One tray at a time, then pack away

  • Repeat the same few favourites across the week for deeper learning

  • Offer choices. Water tray or fizz today

  • Stop while it is still fun so they want to come back tomorrow


Safety note

Supervise closely and choose taste safe options for little ones who still mouth. Avoid strong scents and high volume reactions. The wow can stay gentle.


Science with toddlers is about wonder. Slow down, watch closely, and name what you both notice. A few simple experiments can turn a winter morning into a memory without turning your house upside down.
