Starting kinder is a huge milestone for little ones and their families. Suddenly, your child is stepping into a bigger world, making new friends, learning to share, and finding their place in a group. As a mum of two and the owner of Bear and Cub Play Centre, I’ve seen firsthand how much these early social skills matter for a smooth transition.
Why Social Skills Matter for Kinder
Social skills are more than just saying hello or sharing toys. They’re about learning to listen, take turns, express feelings, and navigate little disagreements. These skills help children feel secure and included, making kinder a more positive experience for everyone.

Gentle Ways to Build Social Skills
1. Practice Playdates
Arrange small playdates with one or two other children. This gives your child a chance to practice sharing, turn-taking, and joining in with others, without the overwhelm of a big group.
2. Role Play Everyday Scenarios
Use teddies or dolls to act out common kinder situations, like asking to join a game or what to do if someone says “no.” This helps little ones feel more prepared for real-life moments.
3. Encourage Independence
Let your child try simple tasks on their own, like packing their bag or putting on their shoes. These little wins help boost confidence for the big kinder days ahead.

4. Talk About Feelings
Chat about different emotions and what they might look or feel like. “Sometimes we feel shy when we meet new people, and that’s okay!” Naming feelings helps kids manage them.
5. Visit Play Spaces
Places like Bear and Cub Play Centre are perfect for gentle social practice. Kids can play alongside others, join group activities, and get used to a new environment with you nearby for support.
Kinder Orientation: What to Expect
Most kinders offer orientation sessions so little ones can explore their new space, meet teachers, and start making friends. These sessions are a great chance for you and your child to get comfortable and ask any questions.

Remember. It’s a Big Step for Parents Too
It’s normal to feel a little emotional as your child heads off to kinder. Be gentle with yourself, and remember you’re giving them the tools to thrive.
If you ever want to chat, swap stories, or help your little one practice their social skills, Bear and Cub Play Centre is always here for you.
Wishing all our little learners (and their families) a smooth, happy start to kinder!
