Tomorrow is R U OK? Day, a gentle reminder to check in with those around us and to pause for a moment to check in with ourselves too. As parents, we often put everyone else first, but it is just as important to look after our own wellbeing and to keep an eye out for other mums and dads in our community.
At Bear and Cub Play Centre, and as a mum myself, I see every day how much parents give. I also know first hand how important it is to look after our mental health as parents. Whether you are juggling work, home, sleep deprivation or just the daily ups and downs of raising little ones, it is a lot. Sometimes it feels like you have to hold it all together, but it is okay to admit when things feel hard. You are not alone, and chances are another parent you know is feeling the same way.
Why It Matters to Ask R U OK to Yourself and to Others
Our children pick up on more than we realise. When we are feeling overwhelmed, tired, or stretched thin, it can affect the whole family. Checking in with yourself is not selfish, it is a way to care for your children and set a healthy example. Checking in with other parents is just as important. A simple “How are you going?” or “I see you” can make a world of difference, especially on the tough days.
A Few Signs Someone Might Need a Check In
Feeling more tired or irritable than usual.
Getting overwhelmed by little things.
Finding it hard to enjoy things you usually love.
Feeling alone, even in a room full of people.
If this sounds familiar, for you or for a friend, please know it is normal to have rough patches. Parenting is a huge job and we all need support.
Simple Ways to Care for Yourself and Each Other
Reach out to a friend, partner, or another parent for a chat.
Take a few minutes for yourself, even if it is just a quiet coffee.
Invite another parent for a walk or playdate.
Offer to listen if someone wants to talk.
Remember, it is okay to ask for help and okay to accept it.
Bear and Cub is Here for Parents Too
Bear and Cub is more than just a play space for little ones, it is a community for parents. If you ever want to chat, share how you are really going, or just need a safe place to take a breather, you are always welcome here. Sometimes just knowing you are not alone is enough.
So as R U OK? Day approaches, let us all take a moment to check in with ourselves and with each other. You matter, and your fellow parents do too. A small conversation can make a big difference.
If you ever want to talk, I am here. And if you need more support, there are wonderful resources out there. Sometimes the first step is just saying, I am not OK right now, and that is okay.
Here is to looking after ourselves and each other, so we can keep looking after our little ones.
